BRING RECYCLABLES TO THE CANAAN RECYCLING CENTER
(LOCATED ON ROUTE 23 HARTLAND ROAD, NORTH OF ROUTE 2)
Open from sunrise to sunset, seven (7) days a week.
The Canaan Recycling Program can save the town money. Since many of the costs to run the program are fixed, THE MORE MATERIAL CANAAN RECYCLES, THE LESS IT COSTS PER TON! The Recycling Program is up and running, very effectively. Now we need YOUR help. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO RECYCLE.
The Canaan Recycling Center has cardboard boxes for different types of recyclables. The boxes are inside the open, covered green container in the yard. Simply bring the recyclables into the container and put them into the right cardboard boxes, which are marked.
We take the following items.
NEWSPAPER - Must be dry. Advertising inserts acceptable.
MAGAZINES - Must be dry. Can be mixed with newspapers.
CARDBOARD - Please flatten.
CEREAL BOXES - Please take inside paper or plastic lining out. then flatten.
JUNK MAIL - Shredded paper. white office paperwork. and any discarded mail.
METAL CANS - Rinse out. No need to remove labels.
GLASS JARS & BOTTLES - Clear, green, or brown. Rinse out, discard metal or plastic lids. No need to remove labels. NO LIGHT BULBS!!
PLASTIC - #1 and #2 plastic only. (Number on bottom of container.) Rinse out, discard lids, tops, and covers.
CANS, PLASTIC CONTAINERS, and GLASS JARS AND BOTTLES do not need to be washed with soap and water. However, NO TRASH (cigarette butts, food. etc.) should be left in them, and they should be rinsed out to get rid of food residues. Milk jugs get pretty rank after the remaining milk goes sour.
RECYCLING SAVES MONEY. When these materials are put in the trash, Canaan pays $60 a ton to have them dumped. Plus, you pay a trash pickup fee. But when Bolster's takes these materials as recyclables, Canaan pays NOTHING to have them disposed of and your pickup fee is much lower. It's a win-win situation.
And don't forget - RECYCLING IS GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
